has a proud history, and it all began right here in baltimore harbor two centuries ago. >> this was the war of 1812. we weren't doing so well. the americans were losing at that time. and the british had just burned washington. that was kind of scaring the people in baltimore city. and fort mchenry was the only thing standing in between the british ships and baltimore city. >> can you describe fort mchenry to us? >> absolutely. from the air, the fort looks like a giant star. it has points on it called "bastions" so that the cannons can have crossfire all the way around the fort. and fort mchenry is named for james mchenry. he was the secretary of war at the time fort mchenry was being built. >> we are standing on the parade ground. this grassy area is where troops would muster for various ceremonies, such as inspection, morning parade, and whatnot. around us are the barracks. they would have been -- back in 1814, they would have been one story. the second story was added in 1829. the fort as you see it now, in general, looks more like it would have done in the civil war.
. the baltimore city police department gathered friday to honor an officer who died while on duty. funeral services for officer forest taylor were held at that time cathedral of mary our queen. officer taylor was in route to a call when his cruiser collided with another vehicle back in february. he died last week from his injuries. >> he's a testament and example of really what it takes to have a dedicated long career. 17 years doing all those difficult assignments. he is the example of commitment. >> officer taylor was laid to rest in his home town of annapolis. he leaves behind a wife and two children. the co-founder of h&s bakery has passed away. called a pillar of the greek community, tsakalos opened h&s in 1943, the h standing for harry, the s for steve fp bread was made by hand and delivered personally. h&s bakery has grown into one of the largest bakeries on the east coast. it's still family owned and operated. harry tsakalos was >> humid in the 70s this morning. there are some stormy conditions out west. a cold front coming in. that front will help, too, this afternoon and this eve

? >> guest: i went to public school in part 10 baltimore until the eighth grade. then i went to some boarding schools or very good in massachusetts. eagle brook school, i was there for eighth and ninth grade. best of its kind. in illinois, there were not too many people going off to schools at that time. half of my friends thought i was sent to military s and i do not have a half cent to reform school which may have been a judgment of my character. in any case, still there, 180 kids at the top of massachusetts and i went to philips academy, spectacular place then and now. one of the best history department honor and that includes both colleges. college i went to williams college in massachusetts and the way that happened was one of my mentors was ted pfizer who recently passed much too worthy. he was head master and in those days where do you want to go to college and i guess harvard. why that? a lot of my friends want to go there. i don't think that is a good reason to go anyplace. you want to write history books. i think we will send you to williams with 1800 students. you go there you will
